Bond Street Project

Project: Bond Street public realm improvement scheme

Client: Westminster City Council Value: £9.85m

Brief: improve the customer experience on the West End’s most prestigious shopping street, including widening and paving footpaths with durable granite slabs and upgrading street lighting; resurfacing of the carriageway with skid-resistant materials to ensure it is safe for road traffic, whether for visitors or retail deliveries.

Completed: Phase 1 Completed October 2018

Set within historic Mayfair, the name of Bond Street is synonymous with British fashion, luxury, style, and world class art and antiques. But in recent years the quality of the public realm in Bond Street has fallen out of step with the caliber of its buildings, retailers and international reputation.

To address these issues Westminster City Council and the New West End Company (NWEC) worked in partnership with Transport for London (TfL) to deliver an ambitious plan to improve Bond Street’s public realm. FM Conway-WSP, with support from urban design consultants Publica and traffic consultants Norman Rourke Pryme were commissioned to develop an elegant and unified design which prioritises pedestrians, manages traffic and parking, improves the public space and re-establishes Bond Street as a world-class destination.

The scheme includes a carefully selected high quality materials palette – York Stone, Portuguese silver granite and green and black stone paving – along with streamlined road signs and markings to create an improved public realm. The design flexibly responds to the different functions and character areas along the street whilst balancing the needs of pedestrians, bicycles, cars, taxis and service vehicles. Wider footways and improved crossings have been provided in anticipation of increased footfall which will come with the opening of the new Elizabeth Line in 2019. New street furniture, public seating, greenery and lighting accompany new public spaces and improved settings for public art. Due to the complexity and prominence of Bond Street, significant and continuous collaboration played a fundamental role in delivering this successful and transformational project, while ensuring that improvements met the many and varied requirements of stakeholders and partners.

The project was completed on time and within budget in September 2018 and delivered sympathetically to minimise disruption to residents, businesses and visitors.
